Dog Bed - How I Got Roscoe to Sleep in his Dog Bed

By: John Spirelli

My dog is terrific. I love my dog and take him everywhere I go. Until of late my dog, Roscoe slept in my bed. In fact, I didn’t even have a dog bed. Some success in dating has changed my standpoint of Roscoe slumbering in my bed.

The day I first brought home a dog bed, Roscoe looked at me like I was completely crazy. I have not much doubt that he assumd that the bed was intended for me. Obviously he had no intention of going from a comfortable Queen sized bed into a dog bed.

Day one - I tried to show him how cozy it was by me lounging on it. However, when he saw me lying on it he thought I was playing with him and it turned into play time instead of try out the new bed time. I tried for about 30 minutes and then gave up. I am a lightweight and openly admit it.

Day 2- I was determined to get him to sleep in the dog bed. I locked the door to my bedroom about the time he usually puts himself to bed hoping it would force him to check out the dog bed which I laid out next to the door. A few befuddled looks, a snort later and the dog decided he was more than happy to sleep on the couch that night. Roscoe wins once more.

Day three - At bed time I brought the dog bed into my bedroom and put it at the foot of my bed and closed the door. Each time he tried to get on the bed I explained to him he was not allowed to. The whimpering melted my heart and I quit after about 10 minutes. Yes, I’m a softy and am proud of it. He wins once more.

Day 4 - This time I knew I had the solution. I brilliantly put all his favorite toys on the dog bed and watched him play with them. I knew he would get tuckered out and go to sleep on it. I watched in great delight. He played and he played. And he continued to play. I began reading a book. Before turning off the light to go to bed I wanted to see him enjoying his dog bed, so I sat up and discovered that Roscoe was fast asleep…on my bed. He outplayed me another time.

Day 5 - Several friendly jokes at my expense and a number of tricks from my friends and family and I was determined to succeed in getting Roscoe to sleep on his dog bed. I had a handful of his favorite dog cookies. He goes crazy for them (almost like how I feel about mint chocolate chip ice cream I guess). I told him to lie down on the floor and I gave him a treat. I told him to stand up and he got a dog snack. Roscoe was listening to all my directions and receiving cookies.

I had Roscoe move onto his dog bed and I gave him a dog snack. I told him to sit down on it and he got one more treat. I then instructed him to lay on it and he got another cookie. I rubbed his tummy and he laid on the bed enjoying the attention. Could it be? Would he stay?

Sure thing, he stayed. He wound up sleeping on the bed all evening. Actually, I think he enjoyed it. Perhaps it was the distance away from my snoring that did it. He slept the entire night on his dog bed. And now it is been five weeks and he has slept each night on his dog bed regardless of where in the house I put it. It required a little bit persistence but now I sleep in my bed and Roscoe sleeps in his dog bed. All is correct in our happy household.
