Goldfish as Pets: Which Kind Should You Get?

By: trisha articlulis

Goldfish have been around for a long long time. They are thought to have originated in China and are now found everywhere in the globe. These are the most typical kind of aquarium or pet fish. Goldfish are small members of the carp family. Since, they've been kept as pets for over a thousand years, there are now many different types of Goldfish available which can differ in size, color, fin type and body kind. Goldfish are easy and hardy fish to maintain and make for great pets particularly for children. They might be kept alone or with other fish in a larger aquarium.

Kinds of Goldfish

Common Goldfish: These are the most typical type of Goldfish and come in various colors including Orange, Red, White etc.

Black Moor: These Goldfish have crazy eyes and always succeed in freaking me out a little. Also often called Dragon Eyes.

Bubble Eye: I find these fish to be less than charming due to tumor like sacks that hang from their heads. These sacks are evidently filled with some form of fluid..

Celestial Eye: Very unusual looking fish that nearly looks as if wearing glasses of some sort. Its eyes bulge out and it has an extended swishy tail.

Comet: The Comet Goldfish looks a lot like the common goldfish excepting that it's smaller and has a split swishy tail.

Fantail: The fantail goldfish is triangular in form and has a high dorsal fin. It is closely associated with the Ryukin variety of Goldfish.

Lionhead: The Lionhead looks gorgeous. It has an exquisite hood and is an incredibly ornate looking fish.

Oranda: Like the Lionhead, the Oranda also has a large hood that encircles its entire face. Not as pretty as the Lionhead in my opinion.

Telescope Eyed: Yet another Googly eyed species of Goldfish. This one is usually dark in color and does not look much like other Goldfish making it a very weird variety.

Panda Moor: This one does'nt even look like your usual Goldfish. A very unusual looking fish in general which has a large split fantail and protruding eyes.

Veiltail: This is a gorgeous fish that has a long swishy tail.

Goldfish can exist in ponds, aquariums or smaller fish tanks without problems. The smaller varieties can be kept in a reasonably simple set up. Contrary to widely held beliefs Goldfish possess a memory span of three months and answer both colors and sounds. They lose their fear of humans eventually and can be fed by hand.

Goldfish are known to like small shrimp and other crustaceans. They can be given especially formulated food you could get from your pet store. Try to not overfeed your fish. Kids especially should be intructed on exactly how much to feed their fish as they could easily become bloated.

Remember to keep a close watch on the vigor of your fish. Watch out for signs of overfeeding or listless behavior and try to seek out problems before they get bad. Keep your fish tank away from direct sunlight as modifications in temperature may adversely affect the healh of your fish. Goldfish make wonderful pets.
