How I got Roscoe to sleep in his Dog Bed

By: Sam Ranger

My dog is great. I adore my dog and take him everywhere I go. Until recently my dog, Roscoe slept in my bed. In fact, I did not even have a dog bed. Some success in dating has changed my standpoint of Roscoe slumbering in my bed.

The day I first brought home a dog bed, Roscoe looked at me as if I was absolutely crazy. I’ve little doubt that he thought that the bed was intended for me. He clearly had no intention of going from a comfortable Queen sized bed in favor of a dog bed.

Day one - I attempted to prove to him how comfortable it was by me lounging on it. However, when he saw me lying down on it he assumd that I was messing around with him and it became play time and not check out the new bed time. I tried for about a half-hour and then gave up. I am a lightweight and freely admit it.

Day two- I was determined to get him to try the dog bed. I closed the door to my bedroom around the time he usually puts himself to bed hoping it would push him to try out the dog bed which I laid out next to the door. A few perplexed looks, a snort later and the dog decided he was more than happy to sleep on the couch that night. Roscoe wins yet again.

Day three - At bed time I took the dog bed into my bedroom and put it at the end of my bed and closed the door. When he tried to get on the bed I informed him he was not supposed to. The crying melted my heart and I gave up after about fifteen minutes. Yes, I am a sucker and am proud of it. He wins another time.

Day four - Now I was positive I had the remedy. I brilliantly put all his favorite toys on the dog bed and watched him play with them. I knew he would get worn out and fall asleep on it. I watched in great delight. He played and he played. And he kept playing. I started reading a book. Before shutting off the light to go to bed I wanted to see him enjoying his dog bed, so I sat up and saw that Roscoe was fast asleep…on my bed. He outplayed me again.

Day five - Some jokes at my expense and a few helpful hints from my family and friends and I was determined to achieve getting Roscoe to sleep on his dog bed. I took a handful of his favorite dog treats. He goes crazy for them (kind of like how I feel about mocha ice cream I guess). I told him to sit down on the floor and I gave him a dog snack. I told him to get up and he got a dog snack. Roscoe was listening to all my orders and receiving treats.

I had Roscoe move onto his dog bed and I gave him a treat. I instructed him to be seated on it and he acquired one more cookie. I then instructed him to lay on it and he got another treat. I rubbed his belly and he laid on the bed reveling in the attention. Could it be? Would he stay?

Sure thing, he stayed. He wound up staying on the bed all night. In fact, I think he enjoyed it. Maybe it was the distance away from my snoring that did it. He slept the entire night on his dog bed. And now it is been five weeks and he has slept each night on his dog bed regardless of where in the house I put it. It took a little perseverance but currently I sleep in my bed and Roscoe sleeps in his dog bed. All is right in our cheery home.
