Pet Grooming Education

By: Sean Reynolds

So you want to be a professional pet-groomer? The job sounds easy to do, in fact, it sounds more like an interest rather than a profession. But, in this day and age, people love their pets so much that a lot of businesses dedicated to pets and pet grooming have spurned everywhere.

Being a professional pet groomer takes more than love for animals, as there are a lot of precautions and things to consider when grooming pets. As an industry, pet grooming is an area of hygiene and health care that is more concentrated on keeping animals groomed. Along with grooming, physical health is also taken cared of like the pet's coat, skin, nails, eyes and a lot more. The basic thing is to keep the animals safe from parasites and insects and to keep them from smelling unhygienic. There are pet grooming technical schools all over the country that teach pet grooming education.

Before deciding to take a course in pet grooming education, one must be able to graduate at least from high school to be able to get accepted in such institutions. Some of these institutions have short courses in pet grooming. The need for a high school certification is to ensure that anyone who wants to become a pet groomer can follow basic rules and understands the importance of responsibility of handling and taking care of pets, much more grooming them.

There is no standard set of rules or education to follow when it comes to pet grooming. But what most pet groomers undergo is the apprenticeship period that usually lasts as short as only a month or as long as entire year.

People who want to become pet groomers must inquire for apprenticeship programs under experienced professional pet groomers. In fact, apprenticeship is more encouraged and preferred by most pet groomer-wannabe. This is because in the business of pet grooming, clients trust groomers who have vast experience and recommendations than those with only formal pet grooming education from technical school under their belt. Experience indeed topples any formal education. However to be a hotshot pet groomer, one can still attend those technical training schools and at the same time gain experience by becoming apprentices under professional groomers.

In America, there are 50 states that approved professional grooming shops and salons where one can actually apply for apprenticeship.

The lessons taught in these pet grooming schools are most often discussed only in theory and without practical application. That is why apprenticeship is the second step that will cement the skills of a person who want to become a pet groomer. Apprenticeship is a good way of gaining pet grooming education. Apprenticeship is the best time for pet groomers to learn a lot about the trade. Hands on education allows one to find out more things about the business and at the same time to learn from mistakes. Standards for the trade such as learning how to handle pets securely, trimming the coats, bathing, disinfecting and even styling the pets are learned in this kind of pet grooming education. There are other things to learn too such as clipping the nails of pets and providing daily maintenance care for each pet that are handled. Apart from learning, absorbing techniques and learning tricks, apprenticeship is also the best time to build a network for oneself, establish connections and secure trust for future clients.
