The Beautiful African Grey Parrot

The African Grey parrot is among the most beautiful and easiest of the parrot family to keep. They are originally from Central Africa, they are known for the exceptional talking ability and the high intelligence. African Greys and known to develop a very large vocabulary, and unusually communicate extremely well with their owners.
These birds are medium-sized normally growing to about 10 to 14 inches. African Grey parrots come in two different types. There is a Congo African Grey, which is light Grey and has a red tail. The Timneh African Grey is a darker charcoal Grey with a maroon tail. Generally the males are larger than the females. Male birds and normally 12 to 14 inches in size. Actually both sexes will the same, one way to spot the difference is female African Grey parrot have a thinner neck and narrower head.
Because these parrots have a long life span may need some one will can make a long-term commitment. It's not unusual for African Greys to live up to 60 years. Because of their high intelligence, African Greys require an owner that is experienced and who can understand their needs. They need to be stimulated and be in an interactive environment or they will become bored. African Greys definitely need their intellectual needs looked after, otherwise there boredom may turn into behavioral problems.
Since they are so sensitive this can lead to behavioral problems. It's certainly possible that even small changes in their surroundings out daily routine can lead an African Grey parrot to become bad tempered. Although there are usually good tempered and well behaved these birds make great pets but can be challenging. Undisciplined African Greys can get into some trouble. They might chew something or bite. They can quickly pick up behaviors therefore if you unintentionally show them bad habits, it will be just as easy to reinforce good ones.
African Grey parrot's are fantastic birds, who are very sociable and make great pets. They will typically flock together in the wild. African Grey parrots living with a family were usually adopt them into their flock. Some of them even cuddle their owners. Although these birds don't always like intense physical contact, even so, they do seem to like head scratching and petting. Most experienced African Grey owners are not bothered bythe birds very strange signs of affection.
African Greys use regurgitation as a deep sign of affection, and will even try to kiss their owners.
It is not recommended that you allow the bird to kiss you, because humans mouths contain bacteria that is harmful to the birds The birds really do need companionship, and owners should realize the importance of understanding this.

African Grey parrots are full of human like qualities and personality. If you are lucky enough to own one, you will see an intelligence unequaled by many other animals.
