Are you toying with the idea of buying a horse? If you are, bear in mind that the steps involved when people buy horses are numerous, and should be followed in order to get the one that suits you the most. Do not grab the first chance you get to acquire one of these majestic creatures without taking all the necessary precautions and taking into account all the things that need to be considered. This is because choosing among horses for sale is not as easy as, say, choosing which dog to take home in a pet shop. On a related note, you should also never choose a horse just because of what it looks like, or how much it appeals to you. There are different kinds of horses that cater to different needs; as such, first thing you should do is to be aware of these. Knowledge of the types of horses will help you in deciding which animal is for you. The most elementary way of classifying horses is through their gender – that is, horses can either be mares, stallions, or geldings. Now you might think that grouping the horses this way seems too obvious to be important . However, it might interest you to know that this apparently simple way of classifying the said animals will greatly narrow down your choices from a list of horses for sale based on what you would like the function of your horse to be. Before anything else, it is important to take note of the fact that these three terms are only applied to horses above four years of age. In some countries they apply to three; in others, five. Which among these three is correct is not crucial; what should be remembered is that young horses are called differently. In general, horses younger than a year are identified as "foals". When they reach the year-old mark, the males are then called "colts", and the females, "fillies". Mares are adult female horses. Contrary to popular belief, it is not the stallion but the mare that stands as the leader in a group of horses. Mares are prized by some countries for their milk; generally, though, they are chosen among horses for sale for breeding purposes. Mares can also be employed in industrial work, but you should consider that they might not be in their best behavior come breeding season. This is because it is during this time that they become "in heat", making them more stubborn than usual. Stallions and geldings are both adult male horses, with the only difference being the fact that geldings are castrated , and as such, are infertile. Stallions are known to be temperamental especially when the breeding season is around the corner. This is, of course, due to the hormonal changes that happen during the said period not only in their bodies but also in those of the mares that surround them. This is why most owners prefer that stallions are isolated from mares. Geldings, as they are castrated, do not experience any spike in hormonal activity. Hence, they are the best bet for people who are not interested in breeding horses.
